Adjusting the Tempo

July 21, 2020

Safety First

Please be safe with the speed, stay in control. Back in the day, the head honchos of step set safe guidelines between 126-140 beats per minute. Those guidelines were set a long time ago. From my experience, the safe range is between 138 - 155 beats per minute.

Personally, I feel anything below 138 will be too slow. You will need the momentum of the speed to make the moves doable, especially scissor and double-time repeaters. Most of the time, slower is actually harder because you lose the benefit of momentum. While the tempo is slow, you can travel in the full range of movement, but again it is harder.

Reversehook classes are usually around 150 beats per minute. Reversehook classes are ADVANCED. This assumes that if you attend regularly, you are very familiar with the cues and moves. Thats what it comes down to, knowing what you are doing and being comfortable.

My advice for new steppers is to set the tempo at 138 and learn to be comfortable with the vocal cueing, use the videos for reference only. The tempo of the videos can be slowed down when you are learning a move. You will find that naturally, you will want to increase the tempo in order to execute a double-time repeater without feeling unbalanced.

When I work out by myself, I typically use 147 or 149 BPM. When I'm writing new choreography, I drop back to 138 BPM. I will turn the BMP to 150 as a test for advanced options.

As always, give yourself lots of room. Make sure the floor is clear of clutter.

When you need to adjust the tempo of the music, use a speed and pitch app on your mobile device. These apps allow you to change the speed without changing the pitch of the voice and make me sound like a chipmunk in the process. I guess, if that is your intention, you can also do that with these apps too. :)

Controlling the Speed in iOS

For iOS, use Tempo Magic.

Tempo Magic in the Apple App store

It will be the best $6 you will spend today, probably this year. I have used this app in every step class since 2008.

Add the songs to iTunes and sync your device.

Open tempo Magic on your iPhone (or iPod, or iPad). You do this by clicking the music note icon in the lower left. Again in the lower left, there is a button called "Add Music".

Tempo Magic recognizes playlists made in iTunes. When you select a playlist, the first item is "Add all songs", or if you wish, you can select tracks individually.

Put them in any order you wish, even click the shuffle icon in the upper left, then click ‘Done’ in the upper right.

If you click a track from the list, you will get a screen with a big "TAP" button, make sure the track is at 138 BPM (if it is a Reversehook track) and hit save, or you can cancel. Click Done in the upper right.

Use the large fader to adjust the tempo.

Controlling the Speed in Android

For Android, play music at a different tempo and pitch with Music Speed Changer.

Music Speed Changer in the Play Store

The app is free with ads.

Load the tracks on your device and load them into Music Speed Changer.

For our needs the speed does not need to change in huge amounts. Go into the settings and set the minimum speed to the highest amount (50%) and the maximum speed to its lowest value (200%). This makes the range of the speed fader a little bit easier to control.

This app does not do any beat detection, so we don't know the exact BPM after adjusting. Anywhere between 105% - 110% is probably what you will find comfortable.

This app has other features that you will probably not need, but good to know they are there. You can set up parts of the song to loop, so you can practice a combo without having to reset the song from the beginning. The app also does recording.
